Ambassador Sara Martins’ relationship with the Nordic countries began in September 2020, when she took up her post in Stockholm. Shortly thereafter, she also assumed responsibility for representing Portugal in Latvia. Since then, she has become a central figure in supporting the highly skilled Portuguese diaspora in the region, actively promoting dialogue with researchers, professionals, and institutions.

More than just a career diplomat — which she has been since 1996 — Sara Martins has stood out in recent years for the way she has fostered scientific cooperation and built bridges between communities. Her collaboration with SPOT Nordic has been marked by her promotion of science diplomacy, support for joint projects, and commitment to raising the visibility of Portuguese talent in the Nordic countries.

Her appointment as an Honorary Member of SPOT Nordic is not merely symbolic: it is a concrete recognition of her impactful work, carried out with closeness, empathy, and strategic vision. In a context where science and internationalization are pillars of development, Ambassador Sara Martins’ work reflects the importance of diplomacy as a tool for promoting knowledge and national talent.

With a solid background in law and European affairs, and extensive experience in diplomatic missions in Maputo, New York, Brussels, and Lisbon, Ambassador Sara Martins now brings this same spirit to a new challenge. In June 2025, she was appointed Ambassador of Portugal to Moscow, continuing a career dedicated to representing Portugal around the world.

Honorary Members are not voting members of SPOT Nordic and have no membership fee obligations. However, they are invited to participate in SPOT Nordic’s events and activities, as well as to provide guidance and advice to the board.

This title is granted for an indefinite period, and individuals are proposed as Honorary Members of SPOT Nordic either by the Executive Board or by a member’s proposal, and approved in a Board meeting.

The proposal of new honorary members is exclusively available to SPOT Nordic Associates and is subject to evaluation and approval by the Executive Board.
