The most recent edition of RTP's ‘Decisão Nacional’ programme (In Portuguese from Portugal) discussed the phenomenon of young Portuguese emigrating to the Nordic countries. Representing the SPOT Nordic association, board treasurer Sérgio Dias, who has lived in Denmark for 9 years, spoke about the reasons behind this decision, the various opportunities the region offers and the difficulties of returning to Portugal.

The programme highlighted a series of advantages that have led young Portuguese talents to choose the Nordic countries as a destination for their training and professional careers, underlining the availability of qualified work in line with the professional expectations of the new generation. In addition, the possibility of developing skills and the chance to pursue academic studies at renowned educational institutions with conditions for combining work and study, including access to scholarships and conditions for emancipation that make these countries extremely attractive, were highlights of the discussion.

However, more than just the opportunity to explore professional opportunities, SPOT Nordic has also highlighted the high levels of qualifications of the Portuguese who emigrate to these countries. With a focus on trying to connect these various Portuguese and provide a platform for representing Portuguese researchers and professionals in the Nordic countries, and also trying to support the successful adaptation of young emigrants to a new culture and environment, the association has developed a number of initiatives that seek to help maintain the connection to Portugal and simultaneously give voice to the excellent work that has been carried out by the various Portuguese citizens spread throughout these countries.

The association has also worked actively to establish a network that fosters relationships and collaboration between Portuguese professionals living in these countries, thus promoting a sense of community and belonging.
